A PERSHORE pensioner transferred from Worcester's Ronkswood Hospital to Gloucester after surgery later died, an inquest was told.
Emily May Bird, aged 79, was moved because there was a shortage of intensive care beds at the Worcester hospital.
Mrs Bird, of Rowland Rutter Court, died at Gloucestershire Hospital on Friday, March 9. She had undergone an operation at Worcester to repair a hiatus hernia on Sunday, March 4.
Gloucester coroner David Gibbons opened an inquest on Mrs Bird's death yesterday, but then switched it to the Worcestershire coroner for a full hearing to be held at a later date.
He was told that a post mortem by pathologist Dr Jeremy Uff found death to be due to bronchial pneumonia and an abscess following surgery.
Mrs Bird's body was formally identified by her son Stuart, from South Crest, Redditch.
