WORCESTER people are being asked to turn the other cheek and help raise money for bowel cancer research.

April is bowel cancer awareness week and the Cancer Research Campaign is urging walkers to step forward to raise money for the charity through its "Cheeky Walk".

There are around 34,000 new cases of the disease each year. It is the second biggest cancer killer in the country but many people are too embarrassed to talk about it.

The campaign spends around £5m a year researching, treating and preventing the disease but believes if the taboo was broken and people felt more able to discuss their bowels, more lives would be saved.

"Taking part in a Cancer Research Campaign Cheeky Walk is a great way to help us overcome this embarrassment," said Graham Brogden, senior fund-raiser in Hereford and Worcester.

Warning signs to look out for include persistent constipation or diarrhoea, blood or mucus in bowel movement and unexplained weight loss.
