TWO people have died in separate accidents on busy Worcestershire roads.

Another man had to be airlifted to Birmingham's Selly Oak Hospital with serious chest and leg injuries after one of the crashes, which both happened yesterday afternoon.

Police today refused to comment on whether wet driving conditions were being linked to the collisions, which happened on the A4538 Old Worcester Road near Pinvin, and the A456 a mile from Clows Top.

Traffic on the two roads suffered long delays as motorists were diverted to allow emergency services to carry out their work.

The first collision, which claimed the life of the driver of a red Rover 200, happened between Pinvin and Peopleton.

The route was completely sealed off as firecrews from Pershore and Worcester, an ambulance and the County Air Ambulance were called to the scene.

A Worcester police spokesman said the driver of the R-registered Rover was travelling towards Spetchley when it was in collision with a white Ford Transit van heading towards Evesham.

The Rover driver, who had not been formally identified as the Evening News went to press, was pronounced dead at Worcester's Ronkswood Hospital.

Two men travelling in the van were also taken to Ronkswood, but were not thought to be injured.

"Anyone with any information on this incident should contact PC Vaughan Innes of Worcester on 01905 723888," said the spokesman.

Within three hours the county's roads had claimed a second life when a woman passenger died in an accident between a Ford Orion and VW Passat near the Colliers Arms pub, close to Clows Top, near Bewdley.

Firecrews from Worcester, Kidderminster and Stourport-on-Severn battled to cut the woman free from the silver Orion.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by a "flying doctor".

The driver of the vehicle was airlifted to Selly Oak with serious chest and leg injuries.

A second man, who was driving the VW Passat, was taken to Ronkswood with minor chest injuries.

Diversions were set up and the A456 Bewdley to Tenbury route was closed for more than two hours.
