A NEW bridge across the Severn at the southern end of Pitchcroft, as suggested by Tory Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Richard Adams, would do little to relieve the traffic problems of the city.

As I understand it, the present transport strategy is to dissuade private motorists from entering the city centre-by moving them on to the park-and-ride scheme.

The only thing I can see Mr Adams' bridge achieving would have these hapless motorists whizzing around two bridges at ever-increasing speed and ever-increasing numbers.

The anticipated rise in exhaust and noise pollution on the Castle Street area alone should be enough to knock this idea very firmly on the head.

There is only one place to put this very expensive bridge and that is north of the city when the much-needed north-west ring road extension is completed.

Has anyone given any thought to introducing a monorail to the city? One could be built alongside the rail track running from Henwick Road, St John's, across the Severn and into the city centre.

This would provide a rapid transit system between the two shopping centres that would bring the two business communities closer together, and encourage city dwellers to explore St John's more readily.

A park-and-ride on the side of the old vegetable market would also be of benefit to out-of-town motorists who wouldn't have to take their cars across the river.
