THE race for the Ray Mercer Memorial Trophy has a new leader.
Evesham United skipper and central defender Paul West has moved into pole position, having now played enough games to qualify for the award, based on our exclusive Evening News match ratings.
He has an average of 7.41 from 29 games, and has been a key figure in United's strong promotion challenge in the Dr Martens League Western Division.
West is narrowly ahead of Hereford United's star striker Gavin Williams on 7.36. Fellow Evesham defender and former leader Andy Smith is now third on 7.35.
Worcester City's Carl Heeley, who won the trophy in 1998-99, is fourth on 7.25, with another Evesham defender, Jay Powell, fifth on 7.03.
Kidderminster Harriers' top player is record signing Andy Ducros on 6.81, while striker Richard Burgess leads the Bromsgrove Rovers list on 6.91.
The competition is named in honour of Kidderminster's popular and long-serving secretary Ray Mercer. Worcester central defender Martin Weir won the award last season.
