DROITWICH Spa Cricket Club are only two matches away from a dream trip to Lord's after an 'against all odds' victory in the regional stages of the six-a-side national indoor league.

Despite their two main bowlers being unavailable and two key batsmen suffering from the flu, the Worcestershire champions defeated Albrighton from Shropshire in a sensational game with just three balls to spare.

Spa travel to Edgbaston on Sunday for the next rounds of the Midlands competition.

If they win the semi-final against Olton, starting at 3.30pm, and then the final, they will go through to the national finals at Lords on Sunday, March 18.

For their clash against Shropshire champions Al-brighton, which was played at Wem, Droitwich were indebted to the timeless guile of veteran spinner Martin Woodward, who pegged back a threatening start and also completed two superb return catches.

A flourish of runs in the last three overs took Al-brighton to 101 from their allotted 12 overs.

In reply, the flu-ridden Spa openers, Paul Bryan and Ian Duggan, made a blistering start with the former being the first to reach the compulsory retirement figure of 25 in the fifth over.

A tense few overs in the middle of the innings gave way to some attacking stroke play and excellent running.

With three required from the final over and Al-brighton stretching the gamesmanship, Spa eased home to clinch a tremendous win.
