I WRITE in response to a letter published in the Malvern Gazette recently relating to the security and long-term future of the new Rescue Service being provided in Upton by SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association).

In response to Mrs Hands, the basis of the method of funding it is no different to the system practised by RNLI and, in fact, SARA maintain and train to exactly the same standards with the same background and equipment etc.

The financial stability of SARA generated over the last 27 years, i.e. being formed in 1973, has resulted in them owning both the Chepstow and Sharpness lifeboat stations and our current funding is extremely sound noting that they are totally underwriting the new Upton venture.

We did emphasise at the local public meeting that each station will be financially independent, noting that funds raised within the immediate area will stay at that station unless any specific projects are on hand and then the overall executive committee can review and assist a specific special project, but noting at the current time that this policy in fact is working in Upton's favour, i.e. Sharpness and Chepstow funding actually being channelled to Upton.

SARA have Royal Yacht Association instructor status and do train numerous other professional organisations.

In terms of support, we have been overwhelmed with the volume of support and the standard of qualified people coming forward to offer their services, nothing that everyone applying to join SARA will go through a very specialist training system before becoming operational.

SARA will shortly enter into a contract with the Police and Fire Service to provide a full emergency service operating from the Upton base, noting one is already in existence for Hereford & Worcester, having been provided by Sharpness and Chepstow on a very regular basis over the last 27 years.

Finally, if anybody has any remaining doubts as to the long-term stability of this service, I will be more than pleased to take them down to either Sharpness or Chepstow bases so they can view a full operational station and appreciate the size and professionalism which is undertaken by the SARA organisation.

DAVID WALKER, Chairman, Upton SARA Station, Upton Marina, Upton-upon-Severn.
