Campden and District Music Society: Newbold Piano Quartet: THIS young and very talented quartet was only formed in 1995, but has several prestigious awards to its credit and is supported by the Countess of Munster Trust, a sure sign that it is a group of great promise. The promise was certainly fulfilled on February 20, because this was a wonderful concert. The group is formed round Samantha Newbold (piano), with Matthew Denton (violin), Graham Broadbent (viola) and Tim Steggals (cello). The understanding between them was moving and the ensemble throughout was beautifully balanced. The Frank Bridge Fantasy Quartet had a lovely opening with fine tone. It is a melodic piece, tender yet classically inventive, and one can hear where Benjamin Britten got his inspiration. The last Tranquillo movement was sustained and lovely. The Schumann Quartet Op. 47in E flat major begins with a mysterious, uncertain and self-questioning passage - "after dreadful sleepless nights" - but ends in triumph. There were fine contrasts of mood and style here, controlled, tense, but without histrionics. The cello melody of the third movement was a moving love song, as it is meant to be, and the vivace ending with its boisterous pizzicatos was thrilling. The great work of the evening was Brahms G Minor Quartet, positively orchestral in the majestic themes it offers. The confidence and power of the Newbold here were dazzling. The great variety of moods - gentle intermezzo, pompous march, flamboyant gipsy rondo and furious presto finale - showed them well in command. This concert was a treat not to be missed, and in the best tradition of the society.
