CHILDREN across Wyre Forest were flying high during half-term week in memory of one of the world's most infamous bombings.

French artist Marie-Ange Guilleminot took her "Transformation Parlour" workshop to libraries in Kidderminster, Bewdley and Stourport where youngsters made origami birds for a Hiroshima peace memorial.

The birds, known as Tsurus, were made from paper specially designed by the artist and are regarded as symbols of hope.

They will be threaded into garlands and taken to be displayed at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in Japan in August to mark the anniversary of the atomic bombing.

Louise James, arts officer for Worcestershire County Council which organised the workshops, said: "Each year children all over Japan make Tsurus which form these spectacularly colourful garlands.

"The tradition was started by Sadako Sasaki, a child who was exposed to the A-bomb at the age of two and later died from radiation-related leukaemia."
