MP PETER Luff is pressing the Home Office for funds to rebuild fire stations at Broadway and Pebworth.

The move by the Mid Worcestershire MP follows visits to both stations with the fire brigade's chief officer, David O'Dwyer.

Mr Luff said: "I am delighted that Broadway fire station is to be rebuilt on its present site. The additional land purchased there will enable better training facilities for the fire fighters and mean a better service to residents. But the government does now need to approve the cash for the rebuilding."

Pebworth, Mr Luff explained, was a bit more complicated as the present site was not big enough for a new station and he is writing to the parish council seeking its views on what could be done. If a new site could be identified locally, it might be possible to include other services, such as a creche.

Mr Luff added: "I know there is some concern that the fire station should not move out of the village but a new station is needed if proper fire fighting services are to be maintained and I very much hope a suitable site can be found." He welcomed the brigade's commitment to smaller rural stations. "At a time when every other public service seems to be withdrawing from rural areas into big towns, the brigade's attitude is a breath of fresh air."

Fire brigade spokesman Alec Mackie said they were looking at around half-a-million pounds to rebuild each station. "We don't expect to get both at the same time, but we have put markers down," he said.
