JUDO: A GREAT performance from Samurai juniors at the Midlands Minimon saw them come away with four medals with Tom Walker and Ben Newbury defeating everybody in style to win golds.

Tiny lightweight Jordyn Disspain was the only girl from the club to compete on this occasion, showing superb spirit and good technique.

Although she was just too small for her category, Disspain's excellent attitude earned her the Spirit of Judo award.

Sam Stone achieved four excellent wins in the boys lightweights and finished with a bronze, while the less experienced Jacob Darch fought well.

Matthew Hibbard, who only started judo last September, was again impressive but just missed out on the medals despite an excellent maximum point throw against a top yellow belt.

Another improving player is Karl Gaughan who started well in the next weight group and lost to a player he had beaten before in the last 16.

Joel Darch clocked up some good victories in the next weight up but a narrow defeat left him fifth which was also the final position for Richard Fawkes after he had to move up a category.

Walker gained four maximum point wins in the lightest of the higher grade categories and finished with a comfortable gold.

Newbury did likewise, his longest contest lasting just one minute, and Joel Darch also performed well to take a deserved bronze.

The victories capped a fine performance by an emerging group, rewarding perseverance and training.
