TWO attackers who left their victim fighting for life in a Malvern street have been jailed.

Andrew Hughes, aged 30, was punched senseless and repeatedly kicked as he lay unconscious on a pavement.

Worcester Crown Court heard he stopped breathing, but an Army-trained first-aider who came across the horrific scene resuscitated him.

Alfred Smith, aged 22, of Cales Avenue, Malvern, was jailed for four years and his neighbour, 20-year-old Adrian Gray, also of Cales Avenue, was jailed for three.

Smith was found guilty of causing Mr Hughes grievous bodily harm with intent. Gray admitted the same offence.

A 15-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given a two-year supervision order after admitting GBH.

Terry Pugh, 19, of Winnington Gardens, Hanley Swan, was convicted of causing actual bodily harm to Andrew Stimson who was lying across Mr Hughes to protect him.

Pugh was bailed for pre-sentence reports.

Alfred Smith's sister Rosemary, 19, of Knapp Way, Malvern, admitted actual bodily harm on another woman during the same incident.

Her case was adjourned.

"This was outrageous behaviour against the people of Malvern and Mr Hughes, who nearly lost his life," Judge David McEvoy QC told Gray and Alfred Smith.

"You almost kicked this man to death."

He warned a future, similar offence, would result in a life sentence.

Smith did not give evidence, claiming he remembered nothing about the incident after drinking heavily and taking ecstasy pills.

Gray's counsel Mark Heywood said his client "couldn't believe" he was capable of carrying out the attack.

"To see the full horror laid out before him was humiliating," Mr Heywood said. "He was involved in a despicable act."

Pugh claimed he was the peacemaker but ended up covered in blood when he joined in the violence on Sunday, July 16, last year. Judge McEvoy warned him to expect jail.

The court heard the incident was sparked by someone "making a nuisance of themselves" towards a woman.

The victims had left a wine bar and were by a Church Street burger bar when they were attacked. Part of the action was captured on CCTV.

Prosecutor Graham Cliff said Smith beat Mr Hughes, of Elgar Avenue, Malvern, against a wall and kicked him on the pavement while he was unconscious.

The 15-year-old joined in the violence on Mr Hughes while Pugh attacked Mr Stimson.

"The victim could have died in this street with this lot celebrating," said Mr Cliff.

"It was vicious, gratuitous violence."
