A teenager who led police on a 100mph chase after taking a parked car has been sentenced to 16 months detention.

Stuart Halliday, 18, went out of control in the Austin Metro on the Bromsgrove Highway at Headless Cross and crashed into the central reservation.

He tried to run away but was caught and found to be over the drink-drive limit.

Halliday, of Heronfield Close, Church Hill, Redditch, had twice before been given custody for taking cars without consent and driving while banned.

Judge David McEvoy QC said his driving, which was clocked at up to 115mph, had put other people's lives at risk.

He banned him for three years and ordered him to take an extended test before going on the road again.

Halliday pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified, drink-driving and driving without insurance.

He asked for 20 extra crimes to be taken into consideration.

Prosecutor Samantha Powis said police chased Halliday for one and half miles before he crashed at a sliproad junction in the early hours of October 27 last year.

He breath-alcohol reading was 58 compared with a legal limit of 35.

The teenager committed the offence after taking the car from Redditch just 10 days after being released from detention for being carried in a stolen car.

Defence counsel Tariq Shakoor accepted his client had an appalling record for his age and was at risk of re-offending.

Halliday's life went off track after his father died when he was young and he had a difficult relationship with his stepfather.

Mr Shakoor said he mixed with the wrong crowd and was subjected to peer pressure. On the day of the chase, he had been drinking with friends during the day.

Halliday hoped to start a mechanic's course at Bromsgrove College when he was released.
