HEALTH watchdogs will be visiting the Alexandra Hospital's special care baby unit after a number of complaints from patients.

Redditch and Bromsgrove Community Health Council will be investigating the unit after concerns, including staffing levels, were brought to members' attention.

The move comes after the unit was forced to close for several months because staff did not hold the relevant qualification needed in special care.

And babies who needed special care had to be transferred to other hospitals.

Deputy chief officer of the CHC Moira Morris said: "We have had a number of concerns reported to us about the special care baby unit again. We once had concerns when the unit had to be closed but now we are going to have to go back in there again.

"There have been general concerns and the unit does not appear to be the same as we were led to believe."

"There have been fears over staffing levels in the unit and we will be looking at that," Mrs Morris said.

"When babies are in special care they need 24 hour observation and if there are not enough members of staff to cover a 24 hour shift then you get problems, she added."

A spokesman for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust said: "We are not aware of any problems in the special care baby unit at the Alexandra Hospital. But we welcome the CHCs interest in the department."
