A GROUND-BREAKING project could open new roads for Droit-wich organisations and slash transport costs.

The Vehicle Sharing Scheme encourages town groups to pool their resources.

The Countryside Agency has stumped up two years of funding and the Community Council in Herefordshire and Worcestershire will manage the project.

It is based at the Old Library Centre, in Ombersley Street East, and is led by Gareth Blackett.

The former Worcestershire County Council officer believes the scheme could be the first of its kind in a rural area of Britain.

He said: "There are various benefits for all.

"Vehicle owners can get financial remuneration, access to cheap insurance and maintenance costs, plus a pool of vehicles and drivers.

"Vehicle users get access to new services, leading to greater social inclusion."

The scheme was launched in January.

It means, for example, a Scout group which uses a minibus twice a week can let another organisation use it and contribute to running costs.

Mr Blackett has surveyed dozens of county groups asking what transport they have or require.

Once results are compiled, he can negotiate agreements between Droitwich organisations.

He added: "Lots of people can reap benefits from this innovative idea.

"Schools, nursing homes, youth clubs and charities are among many who will benefit if the community works together."
