CONCERNS over levels of nitrogen dioxide in the Alvechurch area have prompted parish councillors to demand explanations.

In the face of figures which suggest that levels will exceed Government limits by 2005, councillors are approaching Bromsgrove Council's chief environmental health officer to give an explanation at its next meeting on March 12.

The draft report of a two-year study on six sites close to the motorway network revealed Coopers Hill is one of two which could surpass the target within the next four years.

But it is believed there is no concern over public health and some levels of pollution will naturally fall because of sophisticated technology incorporated into modern vehicles.

Mrs Lungley said: "The emissions are not supposed to be harmful to the public but even so why are there recommended minimum levels and why are they being exceeded?"
