THE way Redditch Council deals with dumped cars is being reviewed in an effort to combat the ongoing problem.

Residents at a Church Hill Neighbourhood Group meeting were angry about the number of cars abandoned on the estate.

They complained about the danger the cars posed, the fire risk and the time it took to remove them.

Councillor Bill Hartnett said: "The issue of abandoned vehicles keeps being raised.

"It's an ongoing problem and it splits between three authorities - sometimes it's a county council issue, sometimes a police issue and sometimes a borough council problem.

"Redditch Council can identify an abandoned car and put a sticker on it but if somebody then comes forward and owns up to owning it, it's no longer abandoned and it can't be moved."

Last month, the council dealt with 161 abandoned cars.

Environmental services manager Guy Revans said the current system was being looked at.

"We are talking to legal services because there's a problem - the law is strange and doesn't give a description of what an abandoned vehicle is," he said.
