A LAST ditch attempt was due to be made yesterday to save the town's historic Lido pool from closing this year.

Wychavon District Council was expected last night to rubber-stamp a recommendation to close the 65-year-old pool.

Councillors have proposed not to spend £100,000 on repairs while negotiations with a private company continue.

Lido campaigners have collected more than 2,500 signatures from residents wanting to save the unique brine pool.

Cllr Margaret Rowley (Lib Dem, Bowbrook) will present the petition at the full council meeting.

She said: "We want members to support the joint Labour and Liberal Democrat budget which includes funds to keep the Lido open.

"I hope the number of signatures will show the strength of feeling among residents."

Cllr Don Lawley (Con, Droit.South) said: "I want to see the Lido in a better condition.

"If we don't strike a deal with a private company then it will have to be cleaned up and reopened.

"Whatever happens, I believe the pool will be here forever."
