SPORTY Spa youngsters will be in their element when the town plays host to this year's prestigious county youth games.

More than 600 youngsters will join in Worcestershire Youth Games in May, and events will be split between Droitwich Leisure Centre, in Briar Mill and the nearby Droitwich Spa High School.

The games, jointly organised by Wychavon District Council's youth sports development officer, Steve Brewster, and leisure officer, Sue Healey, are set to attract more than 2,500 spectators.

Fourteen different events will make up the games, including girls' football, hockey, basketball and rugby.

In addition, disabled youngsters will be able to take part in a bowls game as well as 'polybat', which is similar to table-tennis.

Teams representing Worcestershire's six local authority areas, Bromsgrove, Wychavon, Worcester City, Wyre Forest, Malvern Hills and Redditch will all fight it out for a place in the grand finals, which was held last year in Southampton.

The council's sports development team will be out organising competitions and trials in preparation for the games over the coming weeks.

The first, the Wychavon Girls' Football Tournament, will take place on April 3, at Droitwich Leisure Centre.

Anyone who would like to volunteer their services in helping the council organise this prestigous event in May can contact Sue Healey on 01386 565238.
