THE president of Pershore's Rotary Club visited the Cotswold Farm Park to get a closer look at what the club is to help buy for Ugandan farmers.

Clive Crouch said the Rotary Club raised £322 during a collection at Strensham services in August, and were donating the cash to the Farmers Overseas Action Group (FOAG) - a Worcestershire charity which equips Ugandan farmers with oxen and ploughs.

In the run-up to Christmas Mr Crouch and FOAG founder member Malcolm Rankin inspected a plough and a pair of oxen similar to those the Rotary cash would buy.

"They were really big beasts," said Mr Crouch after the visit. "But I think it's a really good cause."

Four families in Teso, eastern Uganda will receive two oxen and a plough between them to help them boost their output.

The idea is for them to use the profit from surplus crops to buy the oxen and plough within two years.

Mr Crouch said it was an excellent charity, which enabled people in developing countries to help themselves, and indicated Pershore's Rotarians would support FOAG again.

Mr Rankin said FOAG, set up in 1981, had already sent 120 pairs of oxen to Teso and representatives from Worcestershire regularly monitored the project. He added FOAG also supported hospitals, schools for disabled children and various agricultural projects in Uganda.
