LIFE in Britain today is so dysfunctional it comes as no surprise to find that - allegedly - there exists such a thing as The Roundabouts Society.

The society's declared aim is to reclaim some of the country's under-exploited green spaces - inner-city roundabouts.

According to founder member Leslie Carson, roundabouts ought to be seen as "oases of beautiful greenery" and can be "christened" by society members, who hold picnics while encircled by smog-producing lines of traffic.

Orangina, the French soft drink company, claims to have taken the group under its corporate wing.

The firm says it "is planning to work with local councils to create a network of roundabouts where picnic access is permitted".

I can't wait.
