PARTY drink-drivers and unroadworthy vehicles will be blitzed by West Mercia police this Christmas in their annual campaign to make roads safer over the festive period.

Drivers are being urged to think before they drink to reduce the risk of still being over the limit when they get behind the wheel the morning after the Christmas party.

They are also being advised to make sure their vehicle is fit for the road before setting out over the holidays.

Roadside checks to target those who drive after the office party or other festive celebration are being carried out by officers across the force's area.

During the campaign, called Safer Roads at Christmas, which began last Friday officers will also be using the roadside checks to ensure vehicles are roadworthy.

Last year one in 15 drivers involved in road accidents in the area during the Christmas and New Year period were over the limit or refused to give a breath test.

Last year, at this time one person was killed and three seriously injured while a further seven were slightly injured in accidents where alcohol was known to be a factor.

While drivers are checked for being over the limit their vehicles will be examined with special emphasis being put on the condition of tyres, brakes and lights.

The force's head of traffic and operations Spt Howard Topping said: "It is important to remember that after a heavy night of drinking it may be some time before your are really fit to drive."

Motorists found guilty of drink driving face 12 months' disqualification, a fine of up to £5,000 or six months' jail.
