STEPPING over the parapet of a Worcester store almost proved too much for Hilary Fowler.

But she managed the 85ft abseil, with the help of an instructor, to raise money for cancer research.

"I was frightened and in tears but nearly £2,000 of sponsorship depended on it," said Mrs Fowler, who has beaten breast cancer herself and was congratulated by other survivors of the disease.

Her colleague Florence Wise, from the West Worcestershire Conservative Association office in Malvern Link, also completed the descent from the roof of Marks & Spencer last Saturday (December 9).

"The first two steps are the worst, but once you have your feet on the wall and you realise you are in control, it's a wonderful feeling," said Mrs Wise.

"The crowds were really encouraging and there was a very good atmosphere."

Members of their families members were among more than 60 people taking part in the abseil for the Andrew Williams Memorial Fund.

The event was organised by Malvern Hills District Council's vice-chairman, Barbara Williams, in memory of her husband, who died from cancer in July.

The council's chief executive, Chris Bocock, and about 20 council employees joined Mrs Williams in the abseil.

"Nearly 100 people took part and I was very relieved when I saw the last person safely down," she said. "Money is still coming in, but I believe we have raised about £15,000."
