6 I WOULD like to reply to George Hudson (You Say, December 6) regarding Tesco's proposal to build a supermarket on the site of Christopher Whitehead High School and its offer to replace the school on another site.

What evidence does he have that "additional" traffic would be "sucked into" the area?

Actual education policy would not be decided by a private company. This would still be very much in the hands of the authority, the school head and governors. What Tesco would be providing is a modern school giving our children the best state-of-the-art facilities instead of the cramped inadequate facilities they are enduring at present.

Does Mr Hudson realise our children are having to sit in damp clothes all day through having to move from one block of buildings to another in all weathers?

The only reason that the opportunity of a new school is on the agenda is because of Tesco's offer. The possibility of a new school on the same site simply does not exist. The authorities are in a very strong bargaining position regarding securing the very best possible facilities for our children.

As for the council's leaflet asking for residents responses being an improper use of taxpayers' money, I say a far greater misuse would be to continue to pour thousands upon thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money into maintaining and extending a school way past its economical viability.
