MALVERN Theatre Players' Christmas production leaves you feeling slightly more compassionate towards slugs, greenfly and yes, even maggots.

This year the resident amateur company has gone to town with its costume and set design to produce The Plotters of Cabbage Patch Corner, a play packed full of audience participation.

Directed by Jan Greig, it tells the story of a group of insects whose existence is threatened by the "Big Ones".

The rebellious slug, maggot and greenfly wage war against the "nice" ones, red admiral, bumble bee, ladybird and glow worm, because they are fed up with being victimised by insecticide.

If the level of noise emanating from the Forum Theatre on Friday morning was any indicator of success, then the play is an absolute winner.

Children were bouncing up and down in their seats all eager to shout the loudest, boo the longest and hiss with great gusto at the garden insects' antics.

Andrew Howie stole the children's hearts with his grumpy but endearing impersonation of the cabbage loving slug and Mandi Harris engaged well with the audience as Bumble Bee.

The script is quite involved but with plenty of songs to clap along to and opportunities for children to join in there is plenty of excitement to keep the audience on the ball.

The Plotters of Cabbage Patch Corner has a second run from Boxing Day through to Saturday, December 30.
