A PENSIONER has hit out at contractors after her dog toppled into a hole dug in the road.

Eight-year-old Yorkshire terrier Sally took a tumble in Vancouver Close, Lower Wick, Worcester.

The dog's owner, Jean McDermott, complained that not enough had been done to alert people to the danger.

"My husband Tom was out walking in the dark with Sally," said the 67-year-old, who lives in the Close.

"He threw a ball and Sally ran after it. She didn't see the hole and fell in - about 6ft. It's a wonder she didn't break her legs."

Mr McDermott had to climb down a ladder to rescue the pet.

"There was only a red-and-white wooden barrier around the hole," said Mrs McDermott, who claimed lights and netting ought to have been installed to protect pedestrians.

Severn Trent has dug trenches because the firm has been relining water mains at Lower Wick.

A spokeswoman for Severn Trent - which has since filled in the hole - said the company took safety very seriously.

"I will speak to our engineers and ask if lighting can be put up in future," she said.

"However, this matter was reported to us and our contractors acted promptly. We'd ask people to ring our Customer Helpline on 0800 783 4444 if there are further issues they want to raise."
