POLICE in the Vale of Evesham are highlighting the dangers of driving the morning after a heavy night's drinking.

Drivers are being urged to think before they drink to reduce the risk of still being over the limit when they get behind the wheel the morning after a Christmas party. They are also being advised to make sure their vehicle is fit for the road before they set out over the holiday period.

Roadside checks to target those who drive after the office party or other Christmas celebrations are being carried out in a bid to cut the number of people killed or injured on the roads.

During the "Safer Roads at Christmas" campaign, which begins tomorrow (Friday), police officers will also be using the roadside checks to ensure the vehicles, as well as motorists, are fit to drive.

Last year, one in 15 drivers involved in Christmas time accidents in West Mercia, were over the drink drive limit or refused to give a breath test.

Superintendent Howard Topping, head of traffic operations in West Mercia, said: "Drinking and driving is a year round priority for the force. The tragedy that it can bring to families at any time of the year is particularly highlighted at Christmas when friends and relatives get together."

He said: "The temptation to drink and drive can be greater at Christmas with parties and other social events. It is important to remember that after a heavy night's drinking it may be some time before a driver is really fit to get safely behind the wheel again."

Motorist found guilty of drinking and driving face a minimum 12 month ban, six months imprisonment and fines up to £5,000. A defective vehicle could cost the driver from a fixed penalty of £60 and three penalty points up to a fine of £5,000.
