WYRE Forest Football Club are settling back into life as a sole Kidderminster and District League club after having to withdraw from the Midland Combination.

Forest won Division Two and the Worcestershire Junior Cup last season after finishing third the year before.

But the club could not find the required facilities - a barrier around their pitch - to gain promotion.

Long-serving Joe Wassell's side were playing at Spennells but moved to Springfield Lane for this season's campaign only to last just the first seven games.

Secretary Dave Salter admitted the main problem was the amount of travelling the players were required to do on top of a bout of injuries and suspensions.

Most have returned to their high-flying reserve side in the Kidderminster Saturday Premier Division.

Salter said: "We weren't able to get a ground quite good enough to make the step-up. We tried to get a groundshare but couldn't.

"It has been a hard decision to make. Some wanted to carry on but it was not enough to see us through the season. We couldn't keep struggling from week to week.

"We didn't have to call any games off but sometimes we could only scrape nine or 10 lads and had to rush around like mad things to get somebody to play.

"The players were not prepared to travel. Most of the games were 30 to 40 miles away.

"But as long as we've got a side, we're all right. We might just try another league where the travelling is not as much in the future."
