VIOLENCE erupted in Kidderminster forcing arrests to be made after Harriers first round FA cup match with Burton Albion.

A group of supporters had to be escorted home on a train by police officers after the clashes on Saturday.

The first disturbance was reported just before 4pm in the Farmers Boy pub, in Comberton Hill.

One person was assaulted and damage was caused to the inside of the pub. Two people, from Burton-on-Trent and Derbyshire, were arrested a short distance from the pub. They have both since been released on police bail.

Kidderminster police believe that those involved in the clash were football supporters who did not attend the game.

At 5pm a fight broke out on Comberton Hill. It is again believed to have been among supporters and a further three arrests were made. They were later released without criminal charges.

Police said tension continued running high and officers had to escort between 20 and 30 people through Kidderminster town centre to the railway station.

Further incidents took place during the evening and a strong police presence remained in force.

A group of supporters eventually boarded a train to Birmingham New Street along with British Transport Police officers and Kidderminster police officers, to deter any further offences.

"Although there were a number of ugly scenes these were caused by a small minority of people, apparently intent on causing trouble," said a spokesman for Kidderminster police.

"The vast majority of genuine football supporters from Kidderminster and Burton-on-Trent and Derby areas were extremely well-behaved both during and after the match."

A 34-year-old man, from Kidderminster was arrested for disorderly conduct and was formally cautioned. A man from Worcester, aged 30, was arrested and later charged for using threatening words or behaviour.

Anyone who witnessed the incident in the Farmers Boy pub is being urged to contact Kidderminster police on 01562 820888 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
