WORCESTER Swimming Club's senior swimmers did very well to take third place in the second round of the Speedo League First Division at Rugby.

A young team, including only one girl over the age of 13, surpassed all expectations and after a tense battle throughout the gala, they finished up only four points behind winners Perry Beeches and two behind second-placed Northgate.

Katie Peachey got Worcester off to a winning start in the breaststroke and also finished second in the butterfly, followed by medley relay wins for the 13 and under girls and the open men.

Both Abbie Brown and Richard Istead won their 11 and under butterfly races, Brown winning by 2.5 seconds and later breaking the club record with 31.97 seconds in the 50m crawl.

Andrew Bourne achieved personal bests in both of his individual swims while Katie Askew was on top of her form, swimming three different strokes in three different age groups and recording a personal best in the open backstroke.

Andrew Lowe was a few hundredths of a second outside his best time when winning the open 100m backstroke, while club captain Andrew Wells stormed to victory in the open 100m breaststroke.

Matt Keyse won his open 100m crawl with plenty to spare, while the 13 and under girls and open men won their second relays of the evening in the freestyle.

The club hopes to be at full strength for the next round in Worcester on December 2.
