A MAN had a miraculous escape after a lorry careered into the living room of his house near Malvern.

Tony Smallwood was sitting in his chair when the west-bound vehicle, which had been in collision with a van on the Worcester-Hereford road, smashed into his home at Storridge.

Two men were cut free from the lorry's cab. One was flown to Worcester's Ronkswood Hospital after suffering back pains, while a second man had fractures to his right leg. He was also treated at Ronkswood.

Mr Smallwood suffered "minor injuries", according to the ambulance service, and was treated at Worcester. Two men in the van, which had been travelling towards Worcester, were slightly hurt.

Fire crews from Worcester and Malvern used jacks to prop up the house.

The accident has prompted calls for improved safety at the spot.

"We need traffic calming measures," said Storridge parish council member Fred Beard, who said he had cheated death four years ago when a car came to rest inches from his home.

"We have called for double white lines and the speed limit to be cut from 50mph to 40mph or lower. But nothing's been done."

No one from Worcester police was prepared to comment about the crash.

Andrew Lee-Jones, the lead engineer (operations) for Herefordshire Council, said the authority was negotiating with the parish council.

"We've increased the visibility of the speed limits," he said.

"We're now talking about placing warnings on the carriageway."
