MALVERN supporters of the Jubilee 2000 campaign are preparing to travel to London to take part a rally.
The rally is part of a day of events which will be the last in the Jubilee 2000 campaign, although the cause of debt relief for the World's poorest countries will be taken up by a new organisation, Jubilee Plus International.
Campaigners will gather outside Westminster Abbey on Saturday, December 2, for a procession past the Treasury and Downing Street. It will be followed by the lighting of the Jubilee 2000 flame and a torchlit rally.
Other events during the day include Celebrate Jubilee meetings at St Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey and the Emmanuel Centre, as well as meetings organised by CAFOD, Mothers' Union and Tearfund.
Supporters in Malvern are hoping to fill a coach with people going to the event and are also considering sending representatives to lobby the next G8 Summit, at Sdebitarisi, in Italy, in July.
In 1998, a large contingent from Malvern joined a lobby of the then G7 Summit in Birmingham. The following year, representatives attended the G8 summit in Cologne.
This year's G8 Summit at Okinawa, in Japan, proved a big disappointment to campaigners as it failed to make any significant step towards cancellation of Third World debt.
In Malvern a 'Summit Watch' event was held in the churchyard at Malvern Priory and in the run-up to Okinawa, protesters joined a lobby outside the Japanese embassy in London.
