THE Duke of Gloucester showed a keen interest in the difficulties of coping with a flood when he visited Upton-upon-Severn yesterday (Thursday).

He talked informally to publicans and garage owners in Waterside and New Street, as well as policemen, firemen, paramedics and officers from the Environment Agency.

At the Plough Inn and the King's Head, the Duke asked about the precautions taken to minimise flood damage and the time taken to clean up afterwards.

"How do you keep the water out of the electrics?" he wondered, "And what happens to the rats?"

He also watched members of the Upton fire crew hosing down the mud-caked road in front of the Swan Hotel and talked to Dave Harris and John Jones about the flooding of their New Street garage.
