I WOULD like to add my penn'orth to the remarks about river dredging. Last year a fellow photographer and I met with a city councillor and the Warden for the west bank, at the riverside, to discuss our concerns about the amount of tree growth on the west bank from the railway bridge to Diglis.

This has resulted in the fact that it is almost impossible to get a clear view of the city and indeed the river from that side! We also though that the path south from the bridge is no longer a pleasant one because of this, there are quite a number of "lurking" places unobserved from the opposite bank.

At one time one could stand on the bank and watch the steamers go by. Now one cannot see the river! At the time, I also pointed out that the unrestricted growth of withies had allowed silt to build up in the roots and that the river was at least 10 feet narrower below the Water Gate than it used to be. With the silt brought down by the recent floods I expect it is narrower still.

I have written to the council but have been "fobbed off" with excuses for doing nothing.

The Warden said it's good for wildlife but the only wildlife I saw were the rats scurrying among the debris left in the withy roots.
