The many sides

of Simon Day

WE all have many different sides to our character, but the chances are they're not as well known as those of comedian Simon Day.

The comic has become better known to millions as Billy Bleach, Dave Angel and Tommy Cockles in television's hit comedy programme The Fast Show.

And as the comic tours the nation the man and his alter egos are about to come to a city near you.

But what you may not have known is that the comic who won Time Out's Comedy Award not only performs in the hit show, he writes the material he uses.

"It will be a live performance of the characters from The Fast Show," he said.

Although I have a great time doing the shows, I do like doing theatres, especially the smaller ones as they are more intimate with the audience.

Apart from The Fast Show - which in itself was a pioneering step in television comedy with its succession of small comedy snapshots Simon has also been busy with other work. The comic has appeared on Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer's Randall and Hopkirk Deceased and a number of other shows.

But the talents of the comic who is performing at Hereford's Courtyard Theatre tomorrow night are not confined to the small screen. After playing alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes and Dame Judi Dench in the Oscar winning film, Shakespeare in Love, Simon now says he would consider a main role in the movies.

I played the part of a London cabby-like character who rowed a boat," he added.

I really enjoyed it, so I suppose if someone offered me the right part I would work on a movie. But I would be careful about the part I played."

For more information on the show starting at 8pm, or to book tickets, which cost £12 each or £10 with concessions, contact the theatre's box office on 01432 35925.
