A WORCESTER nightclub manager is ashamed to be English after his staff discovered a foreign student badly beaten in a city centre alleyway.

The European student was discovered slumped and bleeding after an attack in the early hours yesterday.

He was taken in by staff at Images Nightclub, in The Butts, and cleaned up before being taken away by ambulance for hospital treatment.

The man, believed to be a teacher-training student, was found by the DJ of Images who heard a commotion as he went downstairs.

"It was fortunate, really, that our DJ was packing up his CDs and heard a noise outside the door," said manager Stephen Bradford.

"He saw the guy was in quite a bad way and we got him inside. He was with a group of students who, I think, were from Germany, Sweden and Norway.

"They were really shaken up. Apparently, they were on their way home. They'd been out in Worcester and cut through the alleyway opposite when they were approached."

Mr Bradford and a CrownGate Centre guard called police.

"We got the lad into the toilets and cleaned him up, and then I insisted on getting him into an ambulance.

"They were a really decent group but were quite shaken up. One of the girls stayed and, when the lad went in the ambulance, we took her to the police station."

Mr Bradford said he felt embarrassed that the group were visiting the city and had suffered so badly.

"To be honest, I told the guy who was assaulted that I was embarrassed to be English," he said.

"We should be attracting visitors to the city, not frightening them away."

The man was taken to Ronkswood Hospital, where his injuries were not deemed to be serious.

A spokeswoman for University College Worcester was unable to confirm today if the students were visiting their Henwick Road campus.

Worcester police declined to comment on the assault.
