Whilst in Malvern Link recently I noticed the water feature. To me it seemed kitsch and bizarrely out of place. I doubt if one person will make a special trip to Malvern to see it.

What does bring hundreds of people to Malvern every week is the Theatre. They stay in our hotels, eat in our cafes and restaurants and shop in our shops.

It may be that many of us do not like or appreciate all the plays and music performed there. However, the aim is to provide a wide range of entertainment of the highest standard. Malvern is not a large town and it is not surprising that in order to gain audiences for this work the theatre needs to attract people from a wide radius.

Over the last few years the theatre has been subjected to vicious criticism. The council has now cut the theatre's grant. If as a result, the theatre is forced to economise and standards decline, then we may get the theatre of relentless mediocrity that we deserve.
