EVESHAM'S Regal cinema building has been listed by English Heritage as the best example of the work of a renowned Art Deco architect.

News of its listing came as plans moved ahead for a charitable trust to buy and restore it, to keep it as a cinema.

English Heritage says the cinema is a rare survival, and the most architecturally significant in existence by renowned architect, Hurley Robinson.

The government department had no hesitation in giving it Grade II listed status, which means the building cannot be altered without permission.

Concerned cinema enthusiasts took action when owner, John Angel, sold the town's bingo hall and said he wanted to sell the Regal too.

One of the biggest public gatherings at the Town Hall for years followed when scores of people pledged help.

Now professionals have joined in offering their services free, and another public meeting will be held next Friday, November 24 to keep people informed.

Martin Hammon, who organised the first meeting, said: "The response has been tremendous."

But he stressed action so far is only the tip of the iceberg. The building has a sales price of £300,000 plus more to renovate.

Mr Hammon said: "We need Wychavon District Council to help with a lease like Pershore's arts centre in the old Co-Op.

"We are confident we can raise the money we need from lottery funds and other grants but these

take time - which we haven't got."

The action group is presently registering Evesham Regal Trust as a charity, which will give the group fundraising status.

Already Evesham Art Centre is offering cut price rates to the Trust for fundraising events, and local celebrities are being contacted for support.

All this news has been met with mixed feeling from the owner of the Regal.

He wants to sell the cinema as soon as possible, but listing the building has narrowed his options.

He said: "Talk is all very well, but where is the money? I don't appreciate the building being listed behind my back.

"People should realise that I could close it down anytime I like."
