I TAKE Mr Candler's letter (You Say, November 14) as an indication that my nave suggestion concentrated his mind and stimulated his ideas to elaborate my suggestion into a much greater area.

In the 1980s, the possibility of a Norton Parkway was explored in great depth. Unfortunately, finance was not forthcoming from British Rail. Lord Walker was consulted and his suggestion to enlist a French company to finance the project also foundered.

The Conservatives privatised the railways and this has led to a more positive reaction to the Norton project from companies now responsible for railways.

The Conservatives, when in control of the county council in its Hereford & Worcester days, injected an extra £7.5m into highways over five years. This cash injection was not continued after the Labour/Liberal Democrat partnership took control in 1993.

I would like to thank Mr Candler for his interest and affording me the opportunity to put the record straight. It obviously pays to use naivete to motivate positive thinking.
