I READ Mr Gordon Drew's letter in the Journal with some interest. He referred to the recent, welcome, decision of Wychavon District Council to refuse planning permission for the conversion of a dwelling in Whitcroft Road, Pershore into a dental surgery. He then roundly criticises the planning committee, county council and town council for "continuously allowing Whitcroft Road, Apple Tree Road and Cherry Orchard to be used by traffic as a cut through, despite the fact that these roads are designated access and service vehicles only".

Could I put Mr Drew right?

While the planning committee, county council (who made the access order) and town council (who supported it) all believe that the Order is necessary to improve the amenity for local residents, they have not the power to enforce it. Enforcement of traffic orders is the sole responsibility of the police who allocate their limited resources to their best ability.

Perhaps Mr Drew would care to bring his concerns to the notice of the Chief Constable for West Mercia who might be able to squeeze extra funds out of the Home Secretary.

C J NEAL, Town Clerk, Pershore Town Council, Pershore.
