BEWDLEY snooker professional Richard King was happy with his efforts at Malvern's Benson and Hedges Championships as he won his first games in the tournament since 1992.

World No 146 King now goes on to the UK Championships in Bournemouth this Saturday for a first round clash with Scott McKenzie.

The 26-year-old made it through to round four to play Rugeley's Troy Shaw, ranked No 116, but just lost out 5-3.

But King admitted: "In the end a lack of concentration let me down plus a few silly mistakes.

"But overall I can go away pleased with how I played, having won two more matches than I usually do and with the knowledge that I held my nerve at crucial times in the games."

King had earlier beaten Scott Kearney 5-1 and recorded a fine 5-2 victory over Wolverhampton's John Read.

Kidderminster's Terry Murphy, the World No 30, disappointingly fell at his first hurdle in the contest at the Willie Thorne Snooker Club in the third round.

The Irishman was beaten by King's conqueror Shaw 5-1 in the third round and was not happy after a good run in the Grand Prix at Telford.

Murphy enters the UK Championships at the fifth round stage next Wednesday.
