TWO Evesham pubs are doing their bit to boost the town's live music scene - within yards of each other.

The new landlord of the Vauxhall Inn, on Merstow Green wants to strike a chord with folk fans by forming a folk club.

While the Trumpet, also on Merstow Green, has joined forces with a local guitarist to put on live entertainment twice a month.

Robert Hopkins, of the Vauxhall is offering to make his upstairs function room available for a private folk and acoustic music club on Sunday and Monday nights.

He also aims to hold a music and beer festival in a marquee in the grounds of the pub next summer, however, he says he has neither the expertise or time to run it.

Mr Hopkins said: "I think there is a need in Evesham for this kind of entertainment, where older people can get together - there's plenty of disco-type music for the youngsters."

Mr Hopkins would like to hear from past or present festival or folk club organisers, helpers and anyone else interested and can be reached on 01386 446333.

Meanwhile, Chris Ellse, has joined forces with guitarist Colin Rickards to put on live entertainment every second and last Wednesday in the month.

Colin who played solo last week, also plays with the Brace of Peasants and Barking Mad, which are billed to appear at The Trumpet shortly.

Other artistes due include Tom "Spats" Langham and Becky, Sy Nicholls and Chris Dumville.

The only stipulation to musicians appearing at The Trumpet is that they must play their own instruments.

Colin said: "backing tapes or any other accompaniment is out - only live music is allowed. "We have already got folk, jazz blues and Irish blues booked, but anything goes as long as it is live.

"I decided to run the evenings because I think there is a lack of places where live music can be heard in Evesham.

"We want to promote a nice, casual Wednesday evening of good entertainment for music fans in the Vale."

Further information can be obtained from Colin on 01386 593590.
