A LEADING Labour councillor has been labelled a scaremonger after he claimed a new nursery in Rubery could cost lives.

Nursery teacher Maxine Boden has blasted Bromsgrove district councillor Peter McDonald who made the remarks about the facility, earmarked for Gunner Lane, in last week's Advertiser/Messenger.

Cllr McDonald (Lab, Uffdown and Waseley) said Worcestershire County Council had spent cash to create a service road to divert traffic from Gunner Lane when Holywell Primary School was built there.

He said it would be outrageous if the plans were passed but Maxine, the partner of David Ursell who submitted them, said the facility is much needed.

She said: "There is off-road parking for 14 cars and the nursery will be open between 7.45am and 6.15pm so our traffic will not clash with the school chaos.

"We will be living above the nursery so we would hardly put our own lives at risk.

"This is just scaremongering and I want to put residents' minds at rest."

Her dad, district councillor Len Boden (Con, Catshill), said the 20 cars in ten hours visiting the nursery wouldn't cause problems.

He added: "The Labour Government wants to provide extra nurseries so mums can get back to work and this meets the criteria."

But Cllr McDonald said: "I am not scaremongering, just giving support to residents who have made their feelings clear.

"I am bringing to the attention of the district council the serious hazard this nursery and its extra traffic could cause."
