EVESHAM United will visit Cinderford Town in the second round of the FA Umbro Trophy following last night's impressive 2-1 win at Ryman League First Division side Leather-head at Fetcham Grove.
It was United's first game for nearly three weeks, and it showed in the opening stages when they took time to settle and found themselves a goal down inside the opening two minutes.
A mix-up in the United penalty area ended with Paul Harkness stabbing the ball past Damian Beattie.
The playing surface that was under two feet of water only a few days ago made it difficult for both sides to play a neat passing game, but in first half stoppage time United deservedly drew level.
Sam Bowen showed neat skills before releasing Steve McCartan and he drilled past the advancing Stewart Vaughan.
The second half saw United take control. Bowen and Andy Smith had shots saved before they forged 2-1 ahead in the 56th minute.
Bowen found Phil Preedy wide on the left and he cut inside, beating two defenders before firing a powerful low drive past Vaughan into the corner of the net.
In injury time Bowen should have made it three for United, but shot over from point blank range following Smith's cross from the right.
