OAKENSHAW ace Enzo Mucci could be lining up alongside a motor racing legend in the British Touring Cars championship next season.

The mystery driver, who has not been named, will be testing for Mucci's new JS Motorsports Ltd team on Friday before making a decision on whether to accept the drive.

Mucci is refusing to name the star man but event organisers expect him to put around 10,000 spectators on the gate for each event if he accepts.

But the Redditch driver's first competitive outing came to a disappointing end on Sunday. Mucci was three seconds faster than teammate Ted Riddick in the Alfa 156 in testing on Saturday but was forced out of the first round of the AutoItalia at Snetterton with engine trouble.

The engine misfired for a couple of seconds and then started losing power, said the disappointed debutant. The team don't know exactly what went wrong, they checked the engine over and think it must be something wrong with the cylinders.

Mucci is using the three round winter series to get used to saloon car racing ahead of his first season after switching from Formula Three.

Ironically it was a similar problem which brought a premature end to his last competitive outing, also at Snetterton, 18 months ago. Mucci, who is sponsored by Studley Tyre and Exhaust Centre and Mario's Pizza Casa, heads for Brands Hatch on Sunday for round two of the series and will be hoping to unveil a famous teammate after testing in the road going Alfa 147.
