CASH is desperately needed by a group of Droitwich girls trying to raise £50,000 to renovate their well-used meeting place.

Droitwich Guide Association has launched an appeal to raise money for urgent repairs and upgrades required at its headquarters, in Acre Lane.

The building was put up in 1973 and has already exceeded its life span.

The group does not yet know if the building must be completely rebuilt or just repaired.

Plans will incorporate a new kitchen, toilets, a disabled toilet and shower. Work is expected to start in the summer.

Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers use the hall five nights a week.

The girls are planning a series of money-spinning events in the coming months which will include filling empty sweet tubes with coins, and recycling bottle corks, tin cans, silver foil and newspapers.

Spa division commissioner Rosemary O'Grady has served more than 30 years in the Guide movement and is keen to see the hall in tip-top condition.

She said: "We do a good job for the youth in Droitwich.

"Many young girls pass through our doors and we try to see they have a good time and become better citizens."

The association, which supports many charities, is now hoping to boost its own coffers. Members are appealing for residents to support the efforts. Helpers can call Rosemary on (01905) 778670.
