THE ingenuity of The Leys High School and Redditch's One World Link has led to a remarkable win for a youngster in Tanzania.

When a group from Redditch travelled to Mtwara for a towntwinning meeting in the summer, some application forms for a Staples short story writing competition were distributed among the pupils of The Saba Saba Day Secondary School.

As a result, 20 Tanzanian youngsters put pen to paper for the book 2001-A Space Oddity and one lucky teenager has now become a published writer thousands of miles from where he lives.

Azizi Chikomele, 16, beat nearly 5,000 other entries to be one of the hundred lucky winners in the competition.

Jackie Morgan, secretary of Redditch One World Link, said: "Staples has helped us to supply Tanzanian schools with much-needed school supplies and equipment.

"We are thrilled that one of their pupils has achieved this accolade, especially as English is the third language for these children.

"We would like to thank Staples for their futher help to the school. As a thank you for so many entries, Saba Saba School is to receive yet more supplies".

The book consists of 100 stories, each of 100 words on a range of topics but each with a space theme and each one had to begin with the word "slowly".

The books will be sold for £1 at Staples stores across the country and the proceeds will go directly to Childline and three other children's charities: The National Autistic Society, The Royal School for the Blind and Winston's Wish.

It is hoped 150,000 copies will be sold nationwide and through Staples Direct on 0800 141414.
