A group of international pupils had a taste of life in a Redditch school when they visited Birchensale Middle School on Friday.

The 18 MEd/MA students are studying Comparative Education at Birmingham University and come from as far afield as Japan, Indonesia, Greece, Botswana and Thailand.

The students were led by Dr Des Rutherford, a senior lecturer from the school of education.

The group was given a lecture on the middle school three-tier system by headteacher Tom Revell and then visited all the classes in the school, observing lessons and talking to pupils and staff.

Many of the pupils were surprised at the layout and general quietness in class and the fact there was no charge for pupils to attend state schools.

Dr Rutherford congratulated the school on the progress it has made in the last five years and hoped to continue the links between the university and Birchensale in future years.

He also said he intended to write to the chief education officer Julien Kramer to tell him of the visit.
