A REDDITCH secretary went through a truly hair-raising experience at the weekend to raise money to fight an illness which has effected her family.

Kay Mullins, of Headless Cross, works as a secretary at Elgar House, Dr Ron Ford and partners' surgery in Church Road.

She decided to raise money for women with breast cancer by allowing a nurse to almost completely shave her head on Saturday.

Mrs Mullins' mother and sister have both had a mastectomy, one of her colleagues is currently receiving treatment for breast cancer and her other sister has suffered from breast cancer in the past.

It is for these reasons that Mrs Mullins decided she had to support the fight against breast cancer which affects so many people's lives.

She got sponsorship through friends, family and colleagues and also phoned other doctor's surgeries, determined to raise at least £500, which was the minimum amount she would have her head shaved for.

All the money Mrs Mullins receives will go to Solihull Hospital, where they have been raising money for women with breast cancer.

Mrs Mullins said: "I was extremely nervous about having it done - in fact, I was petrified about the actual day.

"But this illness has affected my mum and two sisters and so many others, I felt I simply had to make a statement and try to do my bit to raise money.

"I'm only having a Grade 2 done as I don't want to have a completely shiny head but it is still going to be most of my hair going.

"That's why I wanted to raise at least £500 before I went through with it, to make sure the money I raised was worth losing my hair for and could really benefit others."
