AN Alvechurch woman described as a devoted daughter has died after her car collided with a tree on the A441 Hopwood Road in Alvechurch on Saturday morning.

Glenda Adams, 56, of Warbank Close, received fatal injuries when her car, a blue Rover saloon, left the carriageway at the area known as Roberts Corner and hit a tree at about 9.30am.

Miss Adams, an only child, worked as a secretary at the University of Birmingham in the postgraduate medical department and spent her spare time with her elderly mother, who lives in Hopwood.

Miss Adams' neighbour, Pauline Wheeler, said: "We have lived next door to her for 17 years and she has been a very good neighbour to have.

"She was such a nice lady and was completely devoted to her mother."

Dr David Wall, post graduate dean at Birmingham University, said: "We're absolutely devastated. She has worked with us for several years and has always been a gentle and kind lady who produced a high quality of work all the time she worked here.

"We're finding extremely hard to believe that she won't be coming back, she really will be missed terribly."

A spokesman for the ambulance service said they believed Miss Adams died almost instantly from her injuries.

She was certified dead by a surgeon who was driving past the scene shortly after the accident happened.

The road was blocked for more than an hour while emergency services dealt with the incident and traffic was diverted from the scene.

Sgt Andy Chinn said: "I would appeal to anyone who saw this tragic incident or who has information that may assist the police to contact us on 584888."
